Story - Stage 1 symbol books
Below, you will find some powerpoint presentations of some of the stage 1 symbol books we use in school. Reading symbol books helps our learners to begin to access reading skills such as listening attentively, interpreting symbols and pictures and reading left to right, before they have the skills to decode (read) words themselves.
You will find instructions in the powerpoint show, but here are some steps to get you started:
Step 1: Read the book together. You can click on the sound buttons in the presentation or ask an adult to read the sentences for you. Talk about what you can see in the pictures.
Step 2: Read the book again. This time, see if you can choose the correct symbol to finish the sentences about each picture you see.
Step 3: Read your completed symbol sentences aloud. An adult can help you say the sentence if you need them to but you should try and point to each symbol as they read them. An adult can help you practice this skill by giving you hand under help support to point as they read.
