Addington School

Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in England. At Addington, we recognise that the primary barrier preventing our pupils from meeting national expectations and making progress in their learning is the presence of cognitive learning difficulties and co-existing SEND conditions.

Kimberley Legg is the designated senior leader for Pupil Premium at Addington

Termly Pupil Progress meetings and Annual reviews are designed to ensure every pupil has tailored strategies and interventions that address their academic needs and support their holistic development. These meetings focus on fostering an inclusive and nurturing learning environment where progress against EHCP outcomes are closely monitored, and collaboration between educators, therapists, parents, and students helps every child thrive and reach their full potential."

The following information tells you what we are spending our Pupil Premium money on at Addington this year and why…

We are funding termly SEND-specific training sessions for staff on cognitive learning difficulties, sensory impairments, emotional regulation, and communication strategies.

We are funding additional sessions and training to support Addington’s universal offer with therapists and specialists for Music, Art, Play, Nurture UK, Specialist Services such as Autism and behaviour, OT, and Aroma Touch.

Staff possess advanced SEND expertise, enabling them to deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching practices that effectively meet the diverse needs of all pupils. Link to research on the impact of quality First Teaching: Education Endowment Foundation

Pupils receive timely and appropriate In House specialist interventions with reduced waiting times when referred and triaged. These may include therapies, staff training by therapists, adaptive resources, and personalised strategies to support their development effectively.

With the continued reduction of services such as Occupational Therapy, our school remains committed to ensuring that pupils can access high-quality support. We are dedicated to upskilling our staff through collaboration with therapists to enable them to effectively support the physical and mental health of all learners through universal services. By doing so, we aim to create an environment where students are ready to enjoy and fully engage in their learning.

We are funding and subsidising Increased Access to Enriching and Inclusive Learning Opportunities.

All pupils, regardless of disabilities or economic background, have access to enriching educational and cultural experiences that promote their academic, social, and emotional development while inspiring future aspirations. These opportunities are closely linked to the curriculum and may include activities such as accessing community environments to build life skills, participating in residential trips, or engaging with external providers to enhance curricular learning

Pupil Premium is used to fund educational interventions for the students of low income families. If you are on low income and your child is eligible to receive free school meals for this reason, they will also qualify for Pupil Premium.  Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 now qualify automatically for free school meals, however, this does not automatically qualify them to receive Pupil Premium intervention. It is therefore important that low income families (see criteria below) still complete the application for Early Years Pupil Premium. Please send completed forms (click here for form) to the school office. Further information about this can be found on the Free School Meals page of our website.

A child’s family circumstances are taken into account when determining whether or not they qualify for free school meals/pupil premium. To be eligible, they must be receiving one or more of the following benefits:

  • Income support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • Support as a result of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit

Early years pupil premium and pupil premium are the same thing.   The government has made a distinction between the two because in order to qualify for pupil premium parents need to apply for free school meals.   Once they are successful in their application pupil premium is automatic.   However, as a consequence of giving reception, year 1 and year 2, free school meals parents stopped applying for free school meals as they did not see any point.   Therefore they are being encouraged to apply for early years pupil premium instead.  Once children in reception, year 1 and year 2 have qualified for Early Years Pupil Premium they should automatically qualify for pupil premium in year 3 as pupil premium is given to any student qualifying for Free School Meals in the last 6 years (EVER6 qualification).

Further information about eligibility can be found here.
