Activity 3: Flower counting and recording

In this activity, you will learn to record information in a simple way and to say what the information tells you.

Go on a flower hunt in your garden or when you are out for a walk. See how many different coloured flowers you can find! When you see a flower, put a tick or a different mark in the row next to its colour. You can use the template in the document list below to help you called Flower Counting and Recording

When you're finished, don't forget to answer these questions:

Which colour of flower did you see the most?

Which colour of flower did you see the least?

If you can't get outside for this activity, why not use the flower type counting sheet provided below along with the Flower Type Counting and Recording sheet to record how many of each type of flower you can see on the page. Remember to make a mark on the recording sheet each time you see each type of flower.

Which type of flower did you see the most?

Which type of flower did you see the least?

Activity 5: Making a Pictogram

In this activity, you will learn to show information in a pictogram.

Using the information you collected in activity 3, now make your own pictogram showing the different flowers you saw. You can do this online using an interactive pictogram by clicking here

After you press play, click on Horizontal Pictograms OWN. You can add your own labels to the rows and click on the + symbol by each row to change the number shown in each row.

Alternatively, you can make a pictogram using the template in the document list below. In the right row, you can draw or cut and stick a flower picture to show every flower that you found when you were counting spring flowers. Don't forget to write a label at the start of each row to say which colour or flower type you are showing.
