Explore - Adventurers - activity 16 - Sugar Science

There are 3 levels to choose from this week.

Activity A - adult support required

Follow the instructions which you can download below to make Sugar Crystal Sparklers!

It might be better to try lollipop sticks if you have them instead of wooden skewers.

Please be careful and let an adult pour in the hot water.

You will need to wait a few days before anything exciting happens.

See if you can answer the questions about what happens on the prompt sheet.

Activity B - medium

Can you get some sugar to dissolve in water?   Dissolve means it seems to disappear when you stir it, especially if the water is warm.

What other types of food dissolve in water?

Even if the water changes colour you can still say it's dissolved if you can no longer see any solid bits in the water.   You might have to wait a while and keep stirring!

You could try:

salt

flour

pepper

herbs

spices

coffee

jelly cubes

tea leaves

rice

pasta

cornflakes

Skittles

anything else you like - but ask permission first!

Activity C - more challenging

Do the dissolving experiment (Activity B), then record your results on the sheet which you can download below.
