RSE (Relationships and Sex Education)

 

At Addington, we highly value the importance of Relationships and Sex education (RSE). The curriculum is designed to be accessible for all our students and promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of our pupils. The aim of RSE is to equip children and young people with the information, skills and values to have safe, fulfilling and enjoyable relationships, and to take responsibility for their sexual health and wellbeing. We believe that RSE must be taught sensitively and inclusively, with respect to the backgrounds and beliefs of pupils and parents while always with the aim of providing pupils with the knowledge they need of the law.

Addington is clear that the primary role in children's sex education lies with parents and carers.  We wish to build a positive and supporting relationship with the parents of children at our school through mutual understanding, trust and co-operation. 

 

Sex and Relationship Education at Addington takes account of individual needs and stages of development and is offered within the same moral framework as all the other elements of education at the school. It is expected that pupils should understand that while different people, influenced by different cultural traditions, may hold different views about sexuality and what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in terms of sexual expression, all people living in England are subject to its law.

 

Our sexuality is about how we respond to ourselves as sexual beings and how we relate to each other sexually. Sexuality is so fundamental to a person that is expressed in the way that we dress, talk and generally affirm ourselves. It is important therefore that the school, in partnership with the home, offers pupils opportunities to learn about and explore issues about sexuality, sexual health, relationships and growing up, through a sound programme of sex and relationships education. Sex and Relationships Education at Addington is inclusive of difference: gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, culture, age, faith or belief, or other life experience.

Addington believe that RSE is an essential part of our pupils’ education and aim to promote the following values.

  • Ensure pupils understand what is happening to their bodies and how to be healthy
  • To understand about their own sexuality and that of others
  • Teach and empower students in their value and self-worth, including aspects of dignity and self-respect
  • To promote a positive mental wellbeing
  • To nurture skills in relationships, such as mutual respect and care, and to develop sensitivity towards the needs of others
  • To foster the ability to manage relationships in a responsible and healthy manner
  • To give pupils the skills and confidence to be safe in relationships and know how and when to say no
  • To promote the value of loving relationships and of family life
  • To recognise that marriage is an important, but not exclusive, context for family life
  • To provide knowledge of human reproductive processes at a level suitable to the student’s level of maturity and understanding
  • To inform students on matters of personal hygiene and related health issues
  • Introduce knowledge about intimate relationships and sex
  • To enable pupils to understand the influence of the media and peer groups and remain independent decision makers with the correct information they learn in RSE
  • To know how to stay safe online
  • To enable pupils to know what is and what is not legal in matters relating to sexual activity
  • To inform pupils where they can access further information and advice
