Welcome to Leila and Leah's Class

  

Our class has nine students and is called Falcon Class.
Leah and Leila are our teachers and job share. Leila teaches on Mondays and Tuesdays. Leah teaches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Kirsty is our Teaching Assistant and Basant and Natalie are our Learning Support Assistants.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a lovely few days back at school. We have begun our new projects this week - recycling and charities project focusing on learning about Woodley Food Bank, creating posters and letters home to Upper School students to make donations that we will deliver next Thursday to the collection point and recycled Art sculptures in Art. We have begun our Food Technology project on making biscuits and cakes to serve to FE on Friday snack times. We had our first session this Friday, setting up the FE Common Room, serving and tidying away, developing independent living skills. Please see more details in the letter sent home about the projects that we are doing this term.
We went into Woodley, to the charities shops, on Wednesday and spent our money raised from doing the Meal Service last half term. The students bought games with their profits. We enjoyed playing these back in class.

Dear Parents and Carers,
On Wednesday, half the class participated in the Berkshire Games, doing very well and also were awarded the bronze medal.  We have continued our Waitrose Community Matters Scheme, sowing seeds for peas, beetroot and raddishes.
We made packaging sleeves, made chicken and sweetcorn pizza with salad for our meal service and delivered them to the classes for their lunch. The students did very well.
We have finished our photo frames today and we have sent them home today.
We supported those performing in the Woodwind concert today. They did very well.
We enjoyed Fitness for our offsite PE today.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a lovely week. We have begun our Waitrose Community Matters Scheme, preparing our allotment plot, by clearing the space, putting down woodchip, pallets and top soil. We will begin growing the seeds next week in pots, ready to transfer to the allotment after Easter. When the vegetables have grown, we will sell the produce outside the Waitrose store to the community.
We made packaging sleeves, made vegetable pasta and garlic bread for our meal service and delivered them to the classes ready for lunch time. This was a great success.
We have begun making photo frames this week, as part of our Home Management project.
We have a new member of staff who has joined our class. We welcome Emma into our class as Learning Support Assistant.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a fantastic week! We have been practising our money skills during our Shopping Service on Mondays and Tuesdays. 
On Wednesday we took part in the House Literacy competition, finding items from books around the school and discovering which books the characters were from. We also watched a show called Jungle Bungle performed by a Westende Theatre company, based around different books, which was very enjoyable.
We took part in a range of activities in the Job Safari on Thursday morning. We learnt about Hilton Hotel, Verizon, Balfour Beatty and Thrive.
We continued our silk painting in Art with Becky to make our final Falcon artwork piece. We have begun our Home Management module, making things for in the home. We have begun making our clay coil pots today.
We have begun our Business Enterprise topic, meal service, taking orders ready for next week's project.
Congratulations to Chris who has become a Teaching Assistant in FE. We now welcome Basant into our class.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a busy week. We enjoyed making Rosemary cuttings in Horticulture, planting these and also making rosemary sachets to take home.
We went to Leapfrog Ceramics and painted plates beautifully. These are now being glazed and we will send these home once they are ready. We also participated in a slime workshop which was a lot of fun. 
We cooked vegetable and quorn spaghetti and garlic bread this week and shared it with Kite class. We had yoghurt for dessert. We have really enjoyed our cooking project. Next half term's focus will be to develop our skills further and extend this into a Business Enterprise project. Further details will be sent home in the accompanying letter this week.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a fantastic week. We shared with the rest of the Key Stage 4 in our assembly, the photos of the First Responders when they came in. 
We enjoyed our 'Work Ready' day to Museum of English Rural Life, learning about the different jobs there - shop, cafe and curating in the museum. We role played how to do these job roles such as to choose items for our shop, decide on prices, use a price gun, display our items, wear a uniform, how to sell and then to bag the items. The students had to find certain items in the museum following their pictures and symbols, being curators for the museum.
We enjoyed our Zumba dance session at Vibez Dance Stuidio in Woodley on Wednesday and have continued to develop our badminton skills on Friday afternoon.

Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a lovely week. We loved cooking our vegetable and quorn spaghetti and garlic bread this week. We shared this with Swan class which was very nice.
We enjoyed seeing the different types of fish at Maidenhead Aquatics on Wednesday and we fed them too!
We have been looking at what a big and little accident is and when it is appropriate to phone for an ambulance for the accident.
We have been doing screen printing in Art this week, learning how to mix the paint, use a squeegie on the screen, making patterns with string to make a lovely effect. These will be used to make the feathers of the falcon bird we are making over the weeks.

Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a wonderful week. We have been busy working on our ASDAN projects. We are thoroughly enjoying our Leisure module. We enjoyed a boxing and fitness session at Loddon Valley Leisure Centre on Wednesday.
We cooked chicken and sweetcorn pizza and salad, with yoghurt for dessert. We shared our lunch with Abi's class this week. It was a very enjoyable experience.
In  Art, we have been making a sensory Spring display board and adding to it each week. It is coming along very nicely!
Please ensure that PE kits are in school every day. Students can bring them in on Mondays, leave them in school all week and we will send them home on Fridays.

Dear Parents and Carers,
This week has flown by! We have been busy with our various projects for our ASDAN Award. We have been using our money skills when doing our Falcon Shopping Service and travel training.
 
On Wednesday we thoroughly enjoyed our Winter Nature Trail and Navigation at Dinton Activity Centre. We went on a bug hunt, a 'Sky Walk', played pooh sticks and did map reading around Dinton Pastures Country Park. 
 
On Thursday we made a lovely lunch for our class. We made vegetable pasta and garlic bread. It was yummy!
 
We used a variety of printing methods in Art this week, making patterns which will help to form the body and wings of our class falcon bird.
 
There has been a change to staffing. Our class staff now is Leah, Leila, Kirsty, Natalie and Chris.

Dear Parents and Carers,
 
We have had a lovely start to the term. We have begun our new project of cooking our own lunch on Thursdays. We made pizza and salad this week. Further into the term, we will expand and start to cook for our class and another class to share and enjoy with us.
 
We have begun offsite PE this Friday. We are now going to Woodford Park Leisure Centre to learn to play Badminton on Friday afternoons. This was an enjoyable session.
 
In Art we have been sketching Falcon birds, making patterns on block printing tiles and silk painting.
 
We have also been working on the recording parts of our ASDAN projects this week.

Dear Parents and Carers, 
 
We have had a brilliant week. We have done lots of Christmas related activities, such as arts and crafts and presents.
We enjoyed Paddington 2 at the cinema and MacDonalds afterwards for our Christmas trip, which was lovely. We did carol singing in Woodley on Tuesday which was a great experience.
We sowed carrot seeds in Horticulture this week. We watched a pantomime on Thursday and enjoyed our Christmas dinner.
We have also been working on the recording parts of our ASDAN projects this week.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a fantastic week. We thoroughly enjoyed our pizza making workshop at Pizza Express on Wednesday. The students did very well and made a yummy lunch for themselves. 

We took part in our Business Enterprise event, by selling our arts and crafts at the FE Christmas Fayre on Thursday. We are really pleased with how successful this event was and our students were so proud of themselves.

We have been busy working on our ASDAN projects this week and have done some lovely writing for this.

We are continuing to enjoy Fitness with Claire on Friday afternoons. Next Friday is our last session of Fitness. Next half term we will be doing Badminton offsite at Woodford Park Leisure Centre.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a lovely week. We went to Tesco in Wokingham and completed the Farm to Fork Explore the Store trail, to discover where food comes from. We found different fruits and vegetables for the colours of the rainbow and talked about where they grow. We helped the fishmonger, went to the chiller and freezer areas, seeing how the food is stored. We also had a food tasting session of cheeses and fruits. 

We ordered and bought our snack and drink from Bosco Lounge in Woodley on Thursday.We also looked for different social sight words while we were in the precinct.

We have been busy making arts and crafts for the FE Christmas Fayre and also for our Christmas display in class. We have glass painted decorations to sell.

We have begun a Falcon Class Shopping Service for our school, where we collect shopping lists from the different classes, buy the items using our money skills and deliver the items to the classes. We will focus more on this after the Christmas holidays.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a great week.  We went to Rainbow Cafe on Wednesday and we were shown how the working cafe operates. We also ordered and bought our lunch here. 

We all participated in the volleyball interhouse competition which was a lot of fun. We also went to the Tennis Fun Day at Sonning Tennis Club on Thursday morning. Everyone enjoyed this experience and received medals.

We have been busy making arts and crafts for the FE Christmas Fayre as part of our Business Enterprise project. We made snowmen this week using polystyrene balls, fabric and stickers. They look very effective.

We enjoyed visiting Woodley Library this week and had a sensory story here which was lovely, as well as choosing our own stories to read too.

We went to Christchurch in Woodley this week, learning about symbols of Christianity, tried on religious garments and made Christingles. We also bought our snack here.

Dear Parents and Carers, 

We have had a super week. We enjoyed our trip to Lockey Farm on Wednesday, discovering where food comes from. We fed the animals and explored the farm shop. We went to Greggs this week to order and pay for our food and drink for snack. We also identified different social sight words in the community.

We have taken part in a range of activities for Anti-Bullying Week. We made a buddy to present in our assembly on Friday.

We have made Christmas tree centre pieces ready to sell at the FE Christmas Fayre. We have been busy preparing for this event.

We are continuing to enjoy our Fitness sessions with Clare on Friday afternoons.

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

We have had a busy week. We have continued our topic of where food comes from by doing a pasta making workshop at Delights of Italy, which was a very enjoyable and practical session. We have visited Oakwood Centre cafe, ordering and paying for our chosen items. We looked around this centre for social sight words and in the Woodley Precinct. We took photographs of these, building up our bank of social sight words that we have found and recognise.

On Friday we had a visit to Woodley Library and had a story session there. Over the weeks we will have a weekly session at Woodley Library to share books, learn how to use the library and to find out what is available there.

In Horticulture, we have been caring for our school grounds, using brooms, rakes and leave grabs to tidy the fallen leaves. We are recycling these by making them into compost. We also tidied the raised beds by removing the pumpkin vines.

We have painted our clay tealight holders today, as part of our creations for the Christmas Fayre.

While out and about, we are also focusing on travel training - stopping at the kerb, identifying when it is safe to cross and when to move to the side if there is an obstacle or another member of the public.

Dear Parents and Careers,

We have had a lovely week. We have been looking at where food comes from. We visited Waitrose and Lidl in Woodley Precinct, looking at the different departments in these and identifying the different foods that can be bought here. We visited the allotment, looking at where food is grown, seeing the different fruit and vegetables here.

We went to Bosco Lounge cafe and experienced choosing and ordering items for our snack. The students all had the opportunity to order, pay for their chosen items and wait for their change and receipt. We looked around Woodley Precinct for social sight words in the community and took photographs of the ones we found.

We set up a mock cafe, with some of the students being waiters and chefs. We ordered the items off of communication boards and made the amounts with coins.

We visited the local shop to buy ingredients for our cooking session and have been focusing on travel training while out.

We took part in a drama workshop with a visiting drama specialist, Keith Parks, which was enjoyable.

We have begun making arts and crafts for the upcoming Christmas Fayre, as part of our Business Enterprise project. We made tealight holders out of clay this week.

This half term, we are continuing to do Fitness with Claire.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy week. In Literacy, we have focused on our communication skills, describing different fruit and vegetables in speech and language games, for our peers to guess what was being described.

In Numeracy, we have been playing a variety of maths games, using our counting, number recognition, one to one correspondence and addition skills.

In Art we have completed our project of creating a 3D landscape. These look fantastic and are now on display in our classroom. We have focused on the features of landscapes, foreground and background, using paints and oil pastels.

We enjoyed delicious cakes and drink at the FE MacMillan Coffee Morning on Thursday too. 

In Horticulture, we have made hanging baskets. We have planted pansies. They are in the polytunnel at school at the moment.We will send these home later in the term. 

We have painted our clay leaf tealight holders that we have made using acryllic paint and fine brushes. We are sending this home today.

We have thoroughly enjoyed Fitness this afternoon with Claire. We also had a presentation today by Jim Roberts, Team GB wheelchair Rugby player and Paralympian, telling us about his inspirational story.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a great week. In Literacy, we have worked on our comprehension skills of the text 'Oliver's Milkshake', recalling facts from the story and thinking about how the character felt. We have been working on reading skills, speech and language programmes, Read and Write Words and OT.

In Art, we have explored 'The Mulberry Tree' by Van Gogh. We recreated his art work using a computer programme on Purple Mash. We looked at the elements in the background and the foreground. We learnt how to select an appropriate colour/effect pen and to change the thickness of the nib. The students have made some wonderful pieces of art using ICT. These will be displayed in our classroom.

In Numeracy, we have focused on addition. We have used Numicon and unifix cubes to help us to add to a number. We will practise addition over the coming weeks.

In Horticulture, we have made grass seed caterpillars, using compost, grass seed, tights and elastic bands. We then used the glue gun to attach goggly eyes. We are looking forward to watching these grow! We continue to care for the other seeds we have sown over the weeks too.

We have begun drama lessons on a Monday afternoon with a visiting drama teacher. This is a great opportunity and we will continue this for the half term.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a fantastic week. We have been busy studying 'Oliver's Milkshake' in Literacy. We have prepared a banana and blueberry milkshake and drank it. We then brainstormed interesting words to describe what it tasted like, looked like and felt like. We wrote some brilliant descriptions. These are now displayed in our classroom.

We have continued our study of Van Gogh this week. We have recreated 'Starry Night' using a range of media which look amazing and are now displayed in our classroom.

In Numeracy, we have worked on number bonds. In Horticulture, we explored different seeds and what they grow into. We have also planted Coleus seeds which are now germinating in the propagator.

We have thoroughly enjoyed Fitness this afternoon with Claire.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy week.In Numeracy, we have been working on money skills and also ordering numbers. In Literacy we have continued ‘The Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham, using this to help with letter sounds and spelling. We have also focused on speech and language programmes, reading and OT programmes. 

We have been researching Van Gogh for our Expressive Arts ASDAN module, locating specific information in a text and also identifying foreground and background in the photographs that we took outside.

In Horticulture, we enjoyed planting hyacinth bulbs. We are looking forward to watching these grow over time.

In PSHE, we created our class code of conduct. The students had very good ideas. We also looked at health and safety in the kitchen, before starting cooking sessions next week.

We have enjoyed Fitness with Claire this afternoon.

At about this time in the term, I request class fund in order to buy snacks and squash for break time. The usual request is for £10 per term or £5 per half term. All donations are gratefully received.

Dear All,

It has been lovely meeting our new class this week, and welcoming back one student who was with me last year. During these three days we have been getting to know our new students and working out how best we can help them develop as young people.

We have worked on Numeracy, Literacy and have begun two new ASDAN modules, Expressive Arts and Sport and Leisure. Our new shared text is called, ‘The Shopping Basket’ by John Burningham. We worked on comprehension and recall of details from the text. We also setup
and established a range of ongoing Literacy-based interventions during the week, including reading, Read Words, Tracks, Write Words and DIY Writing. In Numeracy, we have been working on Number, particularly focusing on counting skills. We have begun our Art topic, 'Landscapes', taking photographs of items in the foreground and background. We have also been working on Speech and Language and OT programmes.

PE this half term is tennis. Danny and a tennis coach, Sally, will lead this. We also have Offsite PE on a Friday afternoon. This half term it is Fitness with a Fitness instructor, Claire. Please ensure that PE kits come into school every Monday. It makes sense to have the P.E kit in school all week. We will send P.E kits home on Fridays.

Music with Sean will take place on a Monday. We will have a cooking session each week on Tuesdays. We have a Science lesson on Tuesdays with Julie. We will have a Horticulture session each week on Wednesdays as part of our ASDAN accreditation. 

We look forward to meeting with you at the first Parents’ Evening, but if you have any concerns prior to that, please do share them with us earlier. We are happy to have notes in the diary or calls to school. If we are teaching, we can always return your calls during break times.
