“We are a community committed to excellence and the development of the potential of all”
Creative Arts @ Addington School
Here in the Creative Arts, our aim is to give pupils across the school the opportunity to explore, develop and widen their skills in the arts. We want our students to develop basic skills in creative arts to enable them to express themselves, develop creativity and build confidence and self-esteem.
All students in the school have a weekly music lesson taught by a specialist music teacher. The curriculum is carefully tailored to meet the varying needs of our students. In the music room students have access to a wide range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments, keyboards, guitars and computers to explore performance and composition skills. Some students have lessons in the sensory theatre, where they experience a multi-sensory musical journey. Our younger students use rhymes and games to develop basic musical skills in their music sessions which links to the EYFS framework.
Beyond the classroom, we give as much opportunity for students to reach their full musical potential as possible and run a variety of extra sessions. These include:
Art and Drama are taught in the different curriculum areas through various topics and projects. There are opportunities for students to work with our Art and Drama specialists during the year with their class and in mixed groups. In the last year, students have created art work to be displayed around the school including the whole school butterfly display and participating in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.
The impact on our pupils is that they become creative arts participators who are as independent as possible. They access and enjoy different art forms and develop self-confidence; a platform that helps positively affect other areas of their learning. Students learn how to communicate their intentions and develop their interests in the arts. Students can achieve Arts Award (Explore, Bronze and Silver Awards) and Music Medals (instrumental lessons). We link with other special schools in the local area to collaborate and participate in concerts, workshops, art exhibitions and GCSE Art. Addington School are also proud to hold Artsmark Gold.
